Joint Replacement Myth #1: Surgical Robots Perform the Whole Surgery

In this article, Dr. Klaassen provides clarification around the use of surgical robots in joint replacement surgery.

Myth: Many people have the misconception that if a surgeon uses a robot during surgery, that the surgeon no longer needs to do any work. They simply control the robot with a joystick.

Response: This isn’t accurate. During joint replacement surgery, the surgeon performs the surgery and uses the robot as a tool. The surgeon will direct the robot where he/she wants the bone cuts and the robot can guide or perform those as directed. The surgeon maintains control throughout the operation.
